732 Reflective Journal 8

This week has been a whirlwind of emotions for various reasons. Another class is winding down in EDUD at TLU. I have gained so much insight and feel I’ve acquired skills for effective leadership. I really enjoyed learning about the Japanese Kaizen principles and discussing them with my half-Japanese friend Linda, who resides with her 95-year-old mother.    I really appreciate the notion of continual improvement where everyone at every moment is doing better all of the time.  I cannot wrap my mind around the notion of Kaizen as a competitive strategy because, in competition, there are always winners and losers.

Another highlight of this week is doing week 8’s Transformational Change Project, The Pitch. On Friday,…

Communication is one of the most essential features of most animals I know.  Yet, humans have been perfecting communication for thousands of years now.  When considering its impact on organizational structure, communication, or the lack thereof, can be the sole difference between failure and success.  So, communication should be one of the most important aspects of my leadership persona.  I have a dear mentor who has suggested I explore some speech therapy options to take my abilities to another level.  I have explored some speech therapy options and have had no real success and only fleeting hopes concerning the limited options that I have explored so far.

It's approaching 24 years since my…

732 Reflective Journal Week 4

Week 4 was steadily paced and full of knowledge yet again. I really loved the notion of Taleb’s Antifragility: Thing that Gain from Disorder. Antifragility claims that it boasts more power than resilience. Taleb notes that people who exhibit resilience absorb shocks and stay the same, whereas the “antifragile” absorb shocks and get stronger.

Numerous medical professionals have praised my resilience throughout the years for bouncing back from a severe TBI and obtaining three degrees. However, I believe I have grown even stronger from events like what I faced in 2001. Whatever happens, as we advance, it’s a blessing to be on this journey with my cohort.

732 TLU Reflective Journal #1  Beau B.

This 1st week has opened my eyes to the various aspects of leadership.  Many of these concepts I really have never fully considered.  One thing I am aware of is I don’t really know what I am not aware of.    What I was really intrigued about was considering the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire.  It took me a day to marinate in the results after I had completed the questionnaire.  I noticed that the next day, I could interpret the results a little better, and the following days, it began to make more sense.  I was not in complete agreement with some of the scores on Actual vs. Ought due to feeling like I intentionally…

This week’s content was very deceptive when I first started reading the course materials when I went the the Menchaca Road Public Library after work.  This has been a habit for me as I deceptively think I will get better peace and quiet than I would if I went home to study.  I find myself noticing a pin drop or somebody rustling a paper.  I’ve been going there for a little-while now after work and reading away from the laptop.  It’s been working so far.

I got through the material fairly well and grasped a clearer understanding of strategic planning and all of the working parts.  When considering the work environment, I never…
